Summary: "Great for city kids!"

Have given this book to most of my son's friends who have moved out of the city. Its a great keepsake for the whole family. A bit wordy and lengthy for pre-schoolers but still a treasure

Summary: "Take this enjoyable and wonderful whirlwind tour of Manhattan with a young boy and his dad!"

One of the best possible father and son day trips would be to spend a day in the fabulous New York City borough (county) of Manhattan. It's a dynamic and magical place to spend a day because there are so many exciting things to look at and do. The boy and his dad have arrived on an underground platform at Grand Central Station and go up to ground level and join the swirl of rushing people. The boy's dad holds his hand, but he lags behind and looks out in amazement at the 2,500 stars on the ceiling, the clock in the center and the towering windows. The day has just begun and it has already been a WOW experience.

Out on the street they look up at the skyscrapers and can see the Chrysler building in the distance. They start their walk and stop in front of Patience and Fortitude, the pink marble lions in front of the New York Public Library. The librarian told them many interesting facts and told them that there were an astonishing "88 miles of bookshelves inside!" The day would be long and tiring, but loads of fun. The boy and his dad get to visit the Empire State Building, look down over the south side of the island from the 86th floor observatory, check out a hot dog stand, "window-shop" at Macy's, walk down Broadway to see the Flatiron Building, take a break at Union Square Park, listen to a few of the more than "170 different languages" spoken in New York, have a snack in Greenwich Village, look across the Hudson River at the Statue of Liberty, hail a taxi, get a glimpse of the James A. Farley Building (General Post Office), write out a postcard and land right back where they started at the Grand Central Station!

This is a wonderful whirlwind tour of Manhattan. I loved the way each page had one or more special little vignettes about the area the boy and his dad were passing through. For example, when they were passing Macy's one of them said, "Only dogs you can carry (not including hot dogs!) are allowed inside a Macy's store." The art work is busy, swirling and is done in slightly muted colors. There is a delightful foldout of the Empire State Building with several facts right up to the lightning rod at the top. The end pages have a nice map showing exactly where the boy and his dad traveled. If you want a fun, affordable trip of Manhattan, come and join this father and son on their little day trip!
